Portugal - June 6, 2006

Destination World is a monthly cultural celebration around town featuring film, art, music, dance, food, and family programming. Start your adventure at the National Park Visitor Center at 246 Market Street to pick up your itinerary for the evening. This month’s featured guests include: The Ilhas de Bruma Folk group and "Passionada" screenwriter Steve Jermanok.

Screenings at the National Park Visitor Center

5:30 pm: "A Talking Picture"/ Um Filme Falado (2003)

  • A contemporary Odyssey from Portugal's finest cineaste, Manuel de Oliveira, this quiet, stirring drama of subtly epic proportions was made when director Oliveira was 96-years-old. Beautiful young history professor Rosa Maria (Oliveira veteran Leonor Silveira) is escorting her precocious eight-year-old daughter Maria Joana (Filipa de Almeida) on a cruise from their native Portugal to Bombay.

7:30 pm: "Passionada" (2002) Q&A with screenwriter Steve Jermanok

  • Passionada is a charming, funny and surprising love story set in the Portuguese-American community of New Bedford, Mass. Three generations of women are torn between their instincts and their old world traditions.

  • 5:00-9:00 pm: Portuguese Tile Painting: Visitors can paint a tile similar to the "azulejos" that are used in public and private places, inside and out throughout the country.

MUSIC:

  • 5:30-6:30 pm: New Bedford-based Fado Group
  • 6:30-7:30 pm: Ilhas de Bruma-- Portuguese Folk Group--
    Ilhas de Bruma, a Portuguese folk music ensemble, has as its main goal the preservation and promotion of Portuguese musical heritage in this great land that values and cherishes cultural diversity.

FOOD:

  • 5:00-9:00 pm: Europa Cafe--Selling Portuguese cuisine.

 

ART AND CULTURE around Town


  • 119 Gallery (8pm-10pm):"Surrender" -- 119's Thursday dance, music and video series.  Dance to portuguese disco for all ages!
  • Friends Restaurant and Bar: Offering Free Portuguese samplers, special menu items, and wine tasting. 
  • Europa Café: Selling Portuguese cuisine at the Brush Art Gallery
