Destination World: Ireland and Greece

March 1, 2007: 5pm-9pm THIS EVENT IS FREE TO THE PUBLIC

COOL is pleased to again be the recipient of a John and Abigail Adams Arts Program grant with the Massachusetts Cultural Council. We will formally be announcing the grant along with Senator Steven Panagiotakos on March 1st at 6:45pm. Many thanks to all of our Destination World partners and funders for their hard work and support this last year!

MUSIC, DANCE, AND FOOD:

The Lowell Five Main Stage at the Whistler House Museum

6-7pm   In cooperation with the Moses Greeley Parker Lecture Series: "Amazing Celtics Tales" with Judy Witters.

7-8pm   Greek and Irish poetry readings by reowned members of the Lowell Community sponored by the Hellenic Culture Society and the Irish Cultural Committee of St. Patrick Parish in Lowell.

8-9pm   Kick up your feet to traditional Irish and Greek music with The Paddy League.

FILM: NATIONAL PARK VISITORS CENTER:

6-9pm  Taste delicious teas and scones provided by the Irish Cultural Committee of St. Patrick Parish while perusing historical artifacts of Ireland.

6pm    "A Hard Life," a documentary. Following the personal journey of Kalliopi Kalogerou, this film explores one women's experience during the turbulent 20th century history of Greece. 30 minutes

7-7:30pm  Join UMass Lowell Professor Bridget Marshall for a conversation about contemporary women's issues and Irish Cultural.

7:30-9:pm  "The Magdalene Sisters" This unflinching drama follows the young lives of four "fallen women" who were rejected by their families and abandoned to the mercy of the Catholic Church in 1960s Ireland.

ART AND CULTURE around Town:

7-9:30pm  Come to the 2nd Lowell Poetry Open Mic and Slam hosted by Brew'd Awakenings.

8-11pm  Traditional Greek music and belly dancing at the Athenian Corner (Free dessert with every entree'.)

9-10pm  The Dubliner Bar and Grill will host Irish singer/songwriter Chuck Campbell

9:30-11pm  The Old Court will rock with The Larkin Brigade, an Irish influenced Folk/Punk lively sounds.
