THE LOWELL FIVE STAGE : REVOLVING MUSEUM
5-6pm Light appetizers from Mambo Grill
6-6:30pm Screening of Black Women of Brazil, a documentary. This upbeat, sensitive and elegantly composed film. Looks at the ways Black Women have coped with racism while validating their lives through their own music and religion.
6:30-7pm "Batizado and Capoeria workshops in October at the Boott Mills." A 3 minute documentary by local filmmaker Brian Findlay demonstrate the energy and passion of the Brazilian martial art. A capoeira demonstration to follow with the Rosa Rubra school based in Lowell.
7-8pm Samba-xe brings Rio's Samba Parade to Lowell. This exciting presentation will give explore that Carnaval is more then a Samba Parade. Carnaval is celebrated in different ways through Brazil. If you join this Carnaval be ready to get sweaty, steamy and dance the Samba. Directed by Agi Sardi.
8-9pm After visiting Carnaval, follow Cornell Coley on the African Diaspora to Brazil to experience Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and African percussion and Traditional drums.
FILM: NATIONAL PARK VISITORS CENTER
NATIONAL PARK VISITOR CENTER:
6:30pm Screening of City of God. This shocking film shows the unbelievable poverty, greed, danger and crime in the Cidade de Deus--a housing project started in the 60's that became one of the most dangerous places in Rio de Janeiro. Busca-Pe is a poor black child who takes the eye of an artist to his horrific surroundings. He eventually becomes a professional photographer where he attempts to capture the humanity of a seemingly inhumane existence. (2002) Rated R/130 mins.
FAMILY PROGRAMMING: Pollard Memorial Library
5:30-6:15pm Brazilian Samba, Bossa Nova, Baiao, Choro and Frevo music with Sulinha Boucher's trio (Catherine Peterson and Marion Campos on guitar).
7pm Central Station ( Independent Film). Dora, a witty retired schoolteacher, leaves Rio de Janeiro with a little boy in tow and takes to the road for an adventure. An award-winning bighearted Brazilian movie directed by Walter Salles.
CULTURE AROUND TOWN:
7-9pm The premier of the monthly LOWELL POETRY SLAM AT BREW'D AWAKENINGS. This is a new, exciting event in Lowell that combines the art of poetry with the competitive art of performance. It puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. Everyone is invited to perform, please arrive early to sign between 6:30-7pm!
